Fight for Daughter Could Change Law in Kansas

Topeka, Kan. — A mother said her daughter was taken away from her and she’s never been allowed her day in court to fight for her child. The woman’s story has now inspired lawmakers to look into what they can do to change the system.

Karen Williams finally had a day in court Tuesday, but it wasn’t the custody hearing she had hoped for. She went to the Kansas Appellate Court arguing that her constitutional rights were violated when a Douglas County judge removed her daughter from her custody all based on the word of a court appointed case manager. The case manager suggested to the judge that there was “probable abuse.”

“She’s never had to give any facts to back up these allegations,” says Williams, “and all I’m asking for is the right to come to court and defend myself.”

Williams and her husband say what’s actually going on is that they questioned the case manager.

Waiting On Sunday’s Chance

A weak front is going to move into the region this evening, and while in many May’s this front would have adequate moisture to work with, and with an uncapped atmosphere would be enough to fire some t/storms, that may not be the case today because the surface moisture is going to be paltry at best with dewpoints in the 50°. The front itself is VERY weak, and will only drop out highs tomorrow a few degrees. Here is the surface map from early this AM

As the front moves through this evening, odds favor it to come through dry.

Kline Files Motion to Remove Two Supereme Court Justices from His Appeal

TOPEKA, Kan. — As FOX 4  News first reported Monday, former Attorney General and Johnson county D.A. Phill Kline filed a motion  Tuesday to have two Kansas Supreme Court justices removed from his appeal to keep his law license. A court spokesman confirmed the filings Tuesday afternoon. They include an appeal brief and the motion for the recusal of justices Carol Beier and Lawton Nuss, the court’s chief justice.

Click here to see Kline’s recusal motion.

Kline’s attorney Tom Condit of Cincinnati said his filing demands justice Carol Beier be removed from hearing Kline’s ethics appeal-citing among other things-a 2008 opinion she authored. Condit says the opinion relied on falsehoods about Kline’s handling of abortion records-and was critical of Kline based on those falsehoods.

Kansas Man Hired Hitman to Kill Wife, Police Say

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man from Basehor, Kansas, faces federal charges after investigators say he tried to hire a hitman to murder his wife. The information comes from the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Western District of Missouri.

Kansas City police say a confidential informant contacted them on May 9, stating that Lee D. Smith, 37, was willing to pay someone to kill his wife. The informant says Smith drove him to the wife’s place of employment in Overland Park, Kansas, and gave him details about his wife’s habits and ways to identify her.

The informant, acting undercover, called Smith Friday, May 11, according to police, to tell him he had Smith’s wife and daughter.  Smith allegedly told the informant to let his daughter go and to continue with the plan to kill his wife.

When You Should Dance Like a Chicken

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Put on your dancing shoes because Monday, May 14, is National Dance Like a Chicken Day.

Before this morning, I truly thought the chicken dance was this:

Weeks ago, I was moderately confused when I watched an episode of FOX’s show “New Girl” feature what I thought was a weird/wrong version of the dance. But I just chalked it up to the quirkiness of Zooey Deschanel’s character. But it was I who had it all wrong. Go figure.
